Colmar is the birthplace of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), the designer of the Statue of Liberty. In 1922, his home became his museum.

The Statue of Liberty is not the only example of Bartholdi's work in this country. He sculpted the friezes of the Brattle Square Church in Boston, Massachusetts.

Bartholdi Fountain in Bartholdi Park is part of the United States Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C.
